Smart City Works Spring 2018 Cohort

By Cynthia S. Artin

Smart City Works, a next generation business accelerator focused on infrastructure and IoT innovation, is on the move again, and are accepting applications for their semi-annual program that brings together disruptive start-ups working in connected cities with potential enterprise and government agency partners and customers.

A non-profit organization, founded a few years ago by veterans in the technology, communications and networking, infrastructure, security, urban planning and capital markets industries, Smart City Works has also attracted a powerful board of advisors with a common mission: to discover, build and launch the next generation of IoT infrastructure start-ups that will contribute to safer and more sustainable cities.

This spring, they are seeking innovative commercial solutions that address significant social and civic challenges in cities and urban environments—infrastructure cost and performance, public safety, community sustainability and resilience.  These solutions must impact and improve one or more of the infrastructure lifecycle:   planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and final disposition.

“We’re seeing tremendous innovation coming out of the growing start-up community in the civil infrastructure world,” said Bob Mazer, co-founder, Smart City Works. “Smaller companies with visionary founders and hard-working teams are able to move with more agility and speed than larger companies, and larger companies are constantly looking to harness the value of disruptive technologies, particularly when it comes to sensors, systems, automation and technologies that improve quality of life and lower the cost of operations in growing urban areas. We’re here to bring the best and brightest together to light a few sparks and support new collaborations.”

Interested companies can apply online, and those who are addressing the following focus areas will be considered:

  • Transport – Solutions that reduce costs, extend serviceable life, reduce congestion, improve parking, improve inter-modalities (i.e., between car, train, bus, bike, pedestrian), or leverage autonomous/ intelligent transportation solutions to improve transportation infrastructure networks.
  • Resilience and Public Safety – Solutions and/or IoT technologies that address the safety, security and resilience of the urban public; that mitigate the impact of rising sea levels, extreme weather events, or other natural or man-made shocks; that protect critical infrastructure; or those solutions that allow cities to be more livable and sustainable.
  • Construction Techniques – Solutions that improve the design, construction, or maintenance of infrastructure; reduce lifecycle costs or improve safety, schedules, or margins.
  • Use of Urban Data and IoT Technologies - Solutions that utilize community, city, state, national, or global data sets to better understand and solve for the most pressing urban issues; that utilize Blockchain solutions to improve the value, use, and trust of infrastructure data sets; or that leverage IoT technologies and devices to improve urban outcomes.

According to the accelerator’s announcement, opportunities are open “to all companies globally whose visionary founders are willing to bring their ideas and passions to participate in person in a unique and impactful business acceleration program.”

Applications close March 7; companies accepted into the program will be notified shortly thereafter.
